The International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities is offering a tour of Istanbul, Turkey on Monday, 14 July.
Tour Description:
The Istanbul tour will begin at approximately 8:00 (a.m.) at the Conference hotels - the Kaya Ramada Plaza and Marin Princess Resort (exact pick-up details to follow via e-mail if you register for the tour).
We will first visit the Sultanahmet Square where the most important events of the Byzantium and Turkish history took place during thousands of years of the rich history of the nations. This square has a special importance with its museums, mosques, Byzantium cisterns and Hippodrome with important historical buildings. We will visit Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet camii), Cistern, and the Kariye Museum. Then we will have a lunch at the Konyali restaurant that is located in the Topkapi Palace where the Ottoman Empire reigned for centuries with their sultans, viziers, janissaries and harem. After lunch we will visit the palace museum (except for the Harem) and famous Grand Bazaar (Turkey's largest covered market, most guide books claim that it has 4000 shops).
The tour will end at approximately 19:00 (7:00 p.m.) when tour attendees will be returned to the Kaya Ramada and Marin Princess.

$AU 98.00. Please be aware that we cannot register you for the tour until payment is received.

AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT
Congratulations to A Pablo
Iannone, the winner of the International Award for Excellence in the
humanities.
A Pablo Iannone’s paper,
Globalization and the Humanities, can be accessed in the online bookstore: http://ijh.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.26/prod.962
Paper abstract: What is globalization?
What policy and decision challenges does it pose? Is the ideal of a
single global community necessary, useful, or desirable in dealing with
globalization problems? What are the prospects for philosophy and, in
general, the humanities in dealing with these problems? My theses are:
first, there are at least two types of globalization processes, widespread
internationalization and transnational interdependence, which occur
independently or in conflictive or complementary combination with each
other; second, the integrationist ideal of a single, value-convergent
global community is neither useful nor necessary for dealing with globalization
problems; third, this ideal is morally objectionable; fourth, there
is a better, transnational dialogue and interaction model for dealing
with the problems; finally, this model points to a bright future for
philosophy and, in general, the humanities to the extent that they insert
themselves in real-world disputes and help find new forms of balance
between conflicting ideas and people who contend but have to live with
each other.
