Learners Creating Their Own Virtual Language Learning Environment

This article presents the result of a project developed by university language learners (teachers-to-be) in which they developed their own virtual learning environment. These students were invited to look for tools not specifically tailored for the learning of a language, but that could be used for that purpose as well. Their final task was to create a free and simple virtual environment to be used by them and other language learners and teachers. The paper begins discussing some theoretical issues related to the project itself: the need for a change of attitude in relation to technology; the importance of promoting autonomy; and the proposal for a broader concept of virtual learning environment. Then, it describes the project itself, explaining each phase and presenting its final product: a blog and a wikispace.

I have a doctorate in applied linguistics and a masters in English language from the Universidade Federal Fluminense. I also have a Diploma from the Royal Society of Arts, issued by the University of Cambridge, UK. I took three postgraduate courses: school management, applied linguistics – TEFL, and children with special problems in school. At present, besides teaching English language and coordinating two special projects at Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, I manage the Celing Language Center and am the president of the Rio de Janeiro English teachers’ association. My interests include the use of technology for language learning, collaborative learning, bilingual learning, learning strategies, learner autonomy, and the listening comprehension process.
