Metaphor and Mission: Using the Language of Literature to Articulate Visions for Positive Social Change
This paper will show that students trained in mathematics, science, and finance can be taught to use literary devices to communicate their visions for social change. The author will demonstrate that development of a ceremonial speech within a data-driven Strategic Presentation Skills curriculum connects with students’ values and imaginations, thereby deepening their commitments to positive social innovation. The lesson to be drawn from this discussion is that knowledge of the humanities can bridge differences in cultures and establish common ground. In a multicultural world, the language of the humanities plays an indispensable role in celebrating characteristics that unite us rather than the differences that divide us.

Trained in English literature (M.A. Stanford University), opera performance (M.F.A. Carnegie Mellon), and speech and voice (D.A. Carnegie Mellon), the author is a Teaching Professor at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, Carnegie Mellon University. At the Heinz School, she teaches Strategic Presentation Skills, a required course that integrates traditional principles of rhetoric with skills required for graduate training in public policy and arts management. This curriculum also has been adapted for seniors who are candidates the CMU's Bachelor of Science in Computational Finance. Professor Lewis has given presentations on how to use her course to teach leadership skills at annual conferences of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and
Administration and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. She was a presenter at the fifth International Conference on New Directions in the
Humanities in July 2007.
