Instrumental value of education is recognized throughout the world. With the passage of time change is involving every sphere of life. The future peace, progress and prosperity can be ensured at local, national and global level through new education and information technology. The changed role of teacher is very crucial in the socio- psychological dimension of the society. Teacher being the human architect can bring positive social change in localism, nationalism and globalism. Instruction is an effective tool in the hands of a teacher. Teen agers are very sensitive and receptive. If a teacher is knowledgeable competent and skilled in imparting instruction; he can change the social values and cultural fiber of the society. This research paper is based on the study of “promoting social skills and character building through classroom instruction”. Fifty teachers and three hundred students of secondary level were sampled. The opinions were gathered through questionnaires on social skills i.e. survival skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills and communication skills. Especially values like trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, accountable, dedicated, devoted, democratic, obligation, friendly, caring, good citizenship and confident were evaluated. It was found that teachers were not consciously making efforts through open and hidden curriculum to inculcate and instill such values in the students. It seemed feasible that all these values might be included in the pre- service and in- service training courses of teachers.

I am working as Assistant professor in Teacher education field in open learning system and coordinating different teacher education courses from elementary to M.phil level.My feilds of interest are teaching skills, educational psychology and curriculum planning. I have been working in teacher education field since 1998.I am Ph.D in Teacher Education,M.phil in Distance Education, Ms.c education and Master in Urdu langage. I am also supervising many theses of Master and M.Phil levels of my own institution and other teacher training institutions/unversities. I am also resource person of Higher Education Commision Pakistan for training development course of fculty at unversity level and also developed three modules on teaching skills, educational psychology and curriculum planning for HEC for staff development training. I have also got different training related to my field.
