The present millennium is one of team work, collective approach (strategically) and networking. But who would network with a SME sector, and who would bear the high costs of participation especially in socially relevant issues, of not much significance to the business development and thus absorb the costs in the pricing of their products. However this needs to be done. MNC’s are encouraging this by insisting on the Corporate Social Responsibility plans of their suppliers and outsourcing/ franchising partners. Hence a review of the situation was felt necessary. The paper thus aims at looking at how through a few competent and enterprising units, who could coordinate their time and resources with their capabilities in a consortium manner, around common policies, practices, teams etc. to participate more fully in this new area of development (CSR) that would ultimately add value to their corporate life. This would empower them to better performances as well as handle some of society’s myriad problems. This is a conceptual paper born of discussions and literature and book reviews on related topics and a few cases of success noted. A few interesting cases where the lofty ideals and vision of individuals have really created CSR in individuals and SMEs has been highlighted. A framework is being attempted for SMEs to emulate. It is aimed to trigger a reflective thinking process that may crystallize into projects and consortium efforts by motivated readers and simple solvable problems ignored would be wiped out form the planet making it a better place to live in.
