Motivations for Visiting Heritage Sites: The Case of Eskisehir

The role of motivation on behaviors of tourists and on their decision-making process has received much attention in the literature related to tourism. It has been suggested that the field of tourism would greatly benefit from a segmentation technique based on motivations because it could provide clues and insights that destination marketers could employ in developing and promoting the popularity of their destinations. Like any other destination, the destination brands famous for their cultural heritage generate sets of expectations or images of a place prior to being visited. Those responsible for the destinations famous for cultural heritage also have to empathize what motivate their customers. Protecting and sustaining a cultural heritage asset is necessary, not only as a part of social responsibility towards future generations but also to attract more visitors to such heritage assets as much as they can. Eskisehir is a city which is located on the banks of the Porsuk River, to the west of Ankara, the capital of Turkey. This paper is aimed to explore what motivate visitors for a visit to Eskisehir and to clarify what sources of information are important when in the process to make up their mind for a visit to Eskisehir. A self-administered questionnaire was used as the instrument to collect the data for this study.

Dr. Mine Oyman

Mine Oyman, has achieved her M.A. and Ph.D. degree at Eskisehir Anadolu University Marketing Department on International Marketing. She is now working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Public Relations and Advertising of Communication Science Faculty. Her academic interests are integrated marketing communication, consumer ethics, cause-related marketing and international marketing.

Hakan Yilmaz

Lecturer, School of Tourism & Hotel Management, Anadolu University, Eskisehir, Turkey

Hakan Yilmaz was born in Bolu in 1979. He is graduated from Anadolu university School of Tourism & Hotel Management at 2001. He is working as a research assistant in School of Tourism & Hotel Management since 2001. He continues Ph.D. program in Anadolu University Social Sciences Institute department of Public Relations and Advertising.

Omer Kutlu

Lecturer, Faculty of Communication Science, Anadolu University, Eskisehir, Turkey

Ömer Kutlu, was born in Linnich- Germany on 08.08.1979. He graduated from hig school(Istanbul Erkek Lisesi) in 1998 and joined at the Anadolu University Communication Sciences Fakulty Department of Advertising and Public Relations. After he graduated from Communication Sciences Faculty in 2003, he joined at the Anadolu University Graduate School of Social Sciences. He continues PhD program in Advertising and Public Relations Department. He has been working at the communication sciences faculty as a research assistant since 2004.
