This paper focuses on the importance of language in inclusive teaching and learning. Since teaching and learning is first and foremost about people, then in this model of practice ‘Language Matters’. To nuture everyone’s personal learning journeys, we have to create access to that learning. Krashen (1981, p.6-7) calls it ‘comprehensible input’ and states that the best methods are those that supply comprehensible input in low anxiety situations, containing messages that allow students to produce when they are ready, recognizing that improvement comes from supplying communicative and comprehensible input, and not from forcing and correcting production. This paper paints a picture of the importance of language in creating that input; the importance of allowing that input to be transformed into personally transformed practice that can and does make a difference to learning. It directly links to the research basis that was used to form the foundation that effective teaching and learning take place when the conditions for learning are conducive for that to occur.
