Reasons for Adult Participation in Courses Organized in a Public Education Center and their Opinions about the Courses

This research was undertaken to determine the purpose of participation of adults attending the courses organized in public education centers under the Ministry of National Education in the central districts of Ankara and their opinions about the courses. A total of 216 adults were included in the research of which 40.7% of adults participated in the course to obtain certificate and acquire a profession and 38.9% participated in the course to obtain new information and improve themselves. Male participants, the 54+ age group, individuals and employees think that their purpose in participating in courses has been achieved. A great majority of the participants stated that the total duration of the course was sufficient. All of the participants think that they can use the knowledge that they acquired from the course in daily life. The majority of participants are thinking of attending another course on a different subject.

Dr. Hülya Öztop is a Associate Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at Hacettepe University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. She teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs in the areas of Family and Consumer Sciences, Housing Physical Environment Arrangement, Family Life Education. Dr. Öztop’s research interests include Family Life Education, Elderly and Family Relations, Consumer Education. She has published in a variety of social science journals, including Educational Gerontology, Social Behavior and Personality: An International Journal, Journal of Qafaz University, Kadın/Women 2000, Turk Geriatri Dergisi, Egitim ve Bilim Dergisi, Yaslı Sorunları Arastırma Dergisi, Aile ve Toplum Dergisi.

Dr. Günsel Terzioğlu is a Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at Hacettepe University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. She teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs in the areas of Family and Consumer Sciences, Family Resource Management, Family Economy, Consumer Decision, Family-Financial System. Dr. Terzioğlu’s research interests include Home Management Principles, Economical Activities of Families, Money Use and Purchases in Families, Saving and Investment Tendencies of Families, Family Budget, Family as a Consumer Unit.
