The question whether or not there is philosophy at all is seldom asked. However once there is talk of African philosophy then it seems natural for some people to inquire into the existence of such a philosophy. The presuppositions underlying such an inquiry pose fundamental philosophical and empirical challenges. Part of the response to this challenge is the necessity for intercultural philosophy. The purpose of the essay is to explore the challenges posed by the inquiry into the existence of African philosophy and to show the interconnection between the challenges and the necessity for intercultural philosophy.
