Educators need to think critically about what knowledge, skills and dispositions students at the secondary school level require in the future. Increasing global flows of students, ideas and information, and current issues of common global concern, coupled with the realities of the crowded curriculum make this imperative. This paper explores considers what understandings should be considered as essential for young people to develop. Participants will explore varied pedagogical trajectories for humanities educators including negotiated curriculum, issues based models and integrated studies curriculum, in comparison to traditional approaches to the teaching and learning of the humanities.

Libby teaches in the Bachelor of Education and post-graduate Diploma in Education programs and is a supervisor for post-graduate research students. Her recent projects include the development of teacher professional learning in Civics and Citizenship education for Australian teachers and the internationalisation of education curriculum, an international program for Japanese teachers and teacher educators on integrated studies, and the development of an online project: the 'Go Korea' website to encourage young Australians to learn about Korean society, with an associated teacher professional development program. Libby's recent research publications include her PhD titled ' Improving student learning in Civics and Citizenshp Education through professional learning communities' and journal articles on internationalisation of education and active learning strategies.
